HYDERABAD: Manjula, widow of telecom engineer K. Suryanarayana who was killed by the Taliban in Afghanistan, attempted to commit suicide on Monday though her situation was out of danger, police said.

Manjula consumed phenyl at her residence in Malkajgiri locality. She, however, was immediately rushed to a hospital, where her condition was stated to be out of danger, according to police.

Her attempted suicide came after one woman, identified as Swapna, told TV news channels that she was Suryanarayana's wife.

Swapna claimed that the engineer had married her in Warangal, about 200 km from here, five years ago and she had a one-year old child from the marriage.

Manjula had threatened on Saturday to commit suicide along with her three children if the government failed to secure safe release of her husband.

Suryanarayana's headless body was found in southern Afghanistan Sunday.

Family members said the widow attempted suicide following the allegations made by the "second wife".
