JAMMU: Trying to shake free from Sunday night's nightmare, the survivors of the massacre in two villages in Doda district recall militants herding them into rooms and unleashing a barrage of gunfire.

"The militants first went to the house of revenue official Gopi Chand and told him to round up Hindus and bring them to his house," says Rajinder Kumar Sharma who is being treated for bullet wounds in both legs and his left arm at the Government Medical Colllege Hospital.

Sharma and several others went at around 11:15 pm to Chand's house. The militants in Pathan garb "told us we are the same persons who escaped at Mandrala in Doda last year (though one of our colleagues was killed then) 'We want revenge as some people from this village who helped the security forces'", they said.

"They took Chand to one of the rooms and shot him dead... They then bolted the door and two of them opened indiscriminate fire," Sharma said.

"I don't know how many died or were injured, some people took me to a nearby road in the morning from where we were taken to the Doda district hospital," he said.

Another survivor, Vilayat Singh, says, "a chowkidar (watchman) of the village Sadhu Ram called us out from our houses and took us to the house of Jagdish Bhagat in another locality of the village".

Singh did not sustain any bullet injuries but was beaten by gun butts. He said the militants "took our identity cards and asked us to line up in a circle inside Bhagat's house".

Like in Chand's house, the militants let loose with the guns they were carrying. "I was standing in the corner of the room then," said Vilayat Singh.

Giloo Devi, who lost her husband Jagdish Bhagat in the attack, said her seven-year-old daughter Sapna was killed by militants. Her 3-month-old son, who escaped unscathed is also being taken care of at GCMH.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad visited GCMH and interacted with the injured who were shifted here for specialised treatment.

He issued instructions for the best possible treatment to be provided to them.

Chief Secretary Vijay Bakaya, Director-General of Police Gopal Sharma, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Anil Goswami, Additional Director-General of Police (CID) Kuldeep Khuda, Jammu Divisional Commissioner Pramod Jain and other senior civil and police officers were also present.
