KABUL: An American journalist jailed on torture charges is to be freed on Sunday, two months earlier than expected, officials said.
Edward Caraballo, 44, was jailed for two years in July 2004 along with two other American citizens, Jonathan Idema and Brent Bennett.

They were found guilty of running a private prison in Kabul and torturing at least eight Afghans in a vigilante counter-terror operation.

A presidential decree issued on April 28, the day of Afghanistan's victory against the Soviet-backed communist regime, released all prisoners whose remaining sentence was less than six months, central prison commander general Shah Mir Amirpour said.

"Caraballo falls into this category, his remaining prison time is two months and eight days, he is going to be released today and will go (back) to his country," said Amirpour.

Edward Caraballo had said during his trial that he was a freelance journalist making a documentary on Idema and Bennett.

Since their conviction, the trio has been housed in the country's largest jail at Pulecharkhi, near Kabul.
