MUMBAI: It may never be at your fingertips again, but may be in your voice. Reliance Infocomm on Thursday introduced what it calls a Talking Message Service (TMS), by which you can send a short voice message to any phone across the country — be it mobile, fixed wireless, or landline.

Since TMS is operator-independent, you can send your voice message to subscribers under any service provider — for Rs2 a minute.

What’s more, with TMS you can even break the language barrier, as it enables you to send your message in the language of your choice.

Though Airtel, Aircel and Spice Telecom have voice messaging services, this is for the first time that the service will be available nationwide. While Aircel’s service is limited to Tamil Nadu, Spice and Airtel’s services are available only in Punjab. Spice voice message system is available in English, Hindi, and Punjab.

Here’s how Reliance’s TMS works: Reliance customers will have to dial 1234111 from their phones (mobile or Hello) and use the service by following some simple voice prompts.

The recipient will get a message on his mobile, alerting him to an incoming talking message. After the alert, he will get a call, playing back the talking message and displaying the sender’s number. If the recipient is a landline customer, he will receive a call that will directly play the message.

Reliance subscribers have an additional benefit. If a Reliance customer is busy and does not want to take the message, he can store it for 24 hours by calling 1234111. According to Mahesh Prasad, president, applications and solutions group, Reliance Communications, “Messaging will no longer be limited to texting.”

Bobby Srinivasan, CEO and president of Romaware Inc, a telecom technology company, said, “Roamware has built on this popularity by enhancing the power of SMS as a communications tool. Our voice SMS provides a non-intrusive ‘talk and listen’ messaging mechanism that allows subscribers to deposit and exchange audio
messages in near real time, or to deposit voice messages for convenient collection by the recipient.”
