NEW DELHI: Delhi Congress MPs met party president Sonia Gandhi on Friday and demanded an ordinance to put an end to the demolition drive.

Following the High Court's order, the MCD has been carrying a demolition drive through out the city razing all the illegal buildings listed by the corporation.

The drive has caused widespread anger among the residents. Fearing a backlash, the Congress and the Centre has been scrambling to find a way out.

"We demand an immediate action in the form of a two line Bill in Parliament. Demolition should be stopped till there is a notification of a new masterplan for the capital,"

Congress MP from Sadar Jagdish Tytler told reporters. Along with Tytler, Krishna Tirath, Sajjan Kumar and Kapil Sibal met Sonia.

"We believe that the extent of unauthorised construction in Delhi is the result of years of neglect by the planning authorities and cannot be resolved overnight," said Sibal. He however added that they were not in favour of unauthorised construction. Sibal said,
"The mess in the capital cannot be cleared overnight. “
