MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut challenging the  system followed by Air India for training instructors for the Boeing 777 aircraft.

Raut is a Member of the Consultative Committee attached to the Civil Aviation Ministry.

Chief Justice K.R. Vyas and Dr D.Y. Chandrachud noted in the judgement that in October 2004 when Boeing 777 was inducted into its fleet, Air India did not have pilots qualified to operate these aircraft.

In order to train Indian Commanders as Instructors at the earliest to reduce dependence on foreign instructors, Air India had selected four of its senior most examiners on A310 aircraft, who had considerable experience and no adverse reports, for training as Instructors for Boeing 777 aircraft.

In its affidavit, Air India had explained that all the four pilots selected for training had the requisite experience.

All the four pilots were also duly certified by a Boeing examiner as eligible for release as flight instructors on B-777 aircraft.

The DGCA had, on March 31, 2006, accepted the training imparted to the pilots on B-777 aircraft.

DGCA also stipulated that the final release check of these instructors should be carried out as per its norms. Air India stated in its affidavit that it would comply with these directions.

The Air India affidavit further stated that the norms do not prescribe that the training can commence only after fulfillment of the total requirement of flying hours.
