Serial blasts claim five lives in Srinagar, 30 wounded

SRINAGAR: Militants on Friday carried out a series of grenade blasts in different parts of Srinagar killing five persons including two women and wounding 30 others including 10 security force personnel.

 Police said seven grenade blasts were triggered by the militants in Srinagar during the day. Four of the blasts were carried in two kilometre radius of civil lines area within a span of one hour this morning.

Deputy inspector general of police, central Kashmir range, Farooq Ahmad said the first grenade was lobbed at Hari Singh High Street. The blast occurred at 11.50 am in which two persons died.

After fifteen minutes the militants lobbed another grenade near the Congress office at Budshah Chowk which was followed by third blast at Batamaloo. Several security personnel were injured. The fourth grenade blast occurred at Dalgate area in which three persons died.

The fifth blast occurred this evening when militants lobbed a grenade at Sakidafar area of Safa Kadal in downtown which 11 persons were injured. They include three CRPF men, two cops and five civilians. The sixth blast was at Bohri Kadal. Two CRPF men and a police constable were injured.

“Militants tried to repeat what they did in Karachi a few days back. They killed people during prayers in Pakistan and now they were trying to repeat the same. They triggered serial blasts at a time when people were busy marking Friday prayers and Baisakhi,” said Farooq.

The slain have been identified as Mudasir Farooq of Airport road, Deepa Joshi of Nepal, Shaheena of Bagwanpora, Javid Ahmad of Brain Nishat and Anup Singh.
Panic gripped the area after the blasts.

There was a huge rush of people waiting for buses to go to Dargah Hazratbal and Gurdwara for prayers. Such was the fear among the people that shopkeepers left their shops and fled to safety. Pedestrians took shelter in lanes.

“I had come out of the Hanuman Mandir when there was a huge explosion. I immediately fell on the ground. I screamed and some people came and removed me to hospital,” said Vichatra of Orissa.
