As if rising number of night robbery in the IT hub of Hinjewadi is not enough to make citizens anxious, read this. The area that is earning notoriety as one of the top five crime spots of the city is functioning without a senior police inspector for the past six months.
dna had reported about Hinjewadi and neighbouring areas turning into a haven for night robberies prompting MP Supriya Sule to intervene and police commissioner Gulabrao Pol to set up a special force and promise to intensify night patrolling in the area.
Yet incidents of robbery continue unabated with one case reported on Tuesday evening after sunset, when two unidentified bike-borne assailants snatched a gold chain valued at Rs60,000 from a 58-year-old woman Vimal Kalbhor of Wakad.
The Hinjewadi police station is working without a full-time senior inspector incharge of police station even though this year the number of crime cases registered have doubled in 2013 as compared to 2012.
The number of FIRs registered in 2013 until December 1 stand at 560 cases as compared to 300-odd cases registered last year, said police stations. When asked how he handles the load, Patil said that it is his job and refused to comment on the issue.
A senior officer told dna, “An inspector was appointed for the area before being transferred to the special branch and the post is vacant since then. When we discussed the issue with senior officers, they claimed that the matter has reached the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) but we have no details of such a case in MAT. At present, the Crime PI is heading the charge and is working round the clock besides taking double responsibility and getting paid for his work only.”
Deputy commissioner of police (Zone III) Shahaji Umap said, “I have requested the city commissionerate to appoint an additional PI attached to the police station till the issue is resolved. Only last week, one PI was appointed to this police station to assist PI Patil.”
Pol refused to comment on the issue stating that he was on leave.

Hinjewadi has a total population of 4lakh and adjacent to the area are national highways and Pune-Mumbai expressway. For the past six months, the post of senior inspector incharge of Hinjewadi police station is vacant and the area that spans more than 55 km is headed on ad-hoc basis by inspector (crime) Parshuram Patil who handles the police station under which three police chowkies of Wakad, Bavdhan and Hinjawadi-MIDC fall.
Role of senior PI who is incharge of police stn
The most important role of senior PI is that the officer represents his entire staff at official meetings and is a team leader. He is in charge of distribution of work, duty schedule, deciding who will investigate the case. Guidance and line of action to investigate the case comes from him. In the court also during filing of chargesheet his signatures is important along with the investigation officer or else the case can be weak as defence will take such a stand during the trial of the case. He has to scrutinise each chargesheet, sign the daily crime register and keep track of all cases. At the local level, the Right to Information (RTI) is made under his name and during bandobast of VIP movements he has to plan the entire bandobast. He provides leadership and direction to the entire working of a police station and reinforces discipline.
