A 25-year old man aspiring to make career in Merchant Navy died in an accident at Wadi Bunder area in Dongri on Thursday afternoon. The police have arrested an errant tempo driver for mowing down the youth and injuring another.

The deceased has been identified as Sunil Mehra, 25, while the injured person has been identified as Sirajul Shaikh, 26.

According to the Dongri police, Mehra who was staying in Indian Seamen Hostel in Masjid Bunder (E), had stepped out of a hotel after having tea and was walking near Thana Estate near his hostel when, at around 1.30pm, a mini tempo (MH-43-F-2556) dashed him.

“Tempo driver Mohammad Hussain Ahmed Nazir Pathan, 29, instead of stepping on the breaks, stepped on the accelerator and went on to hit Mehra who was coming towards the direction of the tempo from ahead. The tempo then went on to hit a cart and injured vendor Shaikh,” said police inspector Vilas Joshi of Dongri police station.

He added that, Mehra was rushed to JJ Hospital where he was declared dead, while Shaikh sustained minor injuries. Pathan was immediately arrested by the police on charges of negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Pathan will be produced before a local court on Friday for police remand, police said.

Mehra, who hails from Jammu and was in Mumbai since past some days in search of job. “He was giving interviews in shipping firms and was aspiring to make career in Merchant Navy. He was staying with the other seamen known to him at the hostel,” said another police officer.

However, colleagues of Mehra claimed that there was foul play to the incident. “We are not ready to believe that it was an accident. I believe there is something foul and needs to be investigated,” said Kunal Singh, one of the colleagues of Mehra. Singh also stays in the same hostel where Mehra was staying.

Rubbishing the claims made by Singh, assistant commissioner of police, Dongri Division, Ravi Thakur said, “It’s a clear cut case of rash and negligent driving amount to the death of Mehra and there was no foul play to the incident whatsoever.”
