Not too far from the milling crowds at Wankhede stadium where India took on Sri Lanka for the World Cup on Saturday, a number of unsung heroes worked behind the scenes  preparing for possible emergencies at the ground.

The state-run Sir JJ Group of Hospitals authority kept alert for medical needs with the help of civic hospitals. In a rare instance, the hospital sent more than 200 doctors on the field and asked all head of departments to be at work. The hospital took the help of civic-run Nair hospital and doctors from the state health service department.

To tend to emergencies during the match, two special OPDs were created at Sachivalay Gymkhana, Nariman Point and Grant Medical College Gymkhana, Marine Drive, located near the stadium. Each OPD had 10 doctors on call and 15 paramedical staff with medical supplies.

Doctors on field were connected by wireless communication to the headquarters at JJ hospital. The hospital deployed 38 ambulances in 15 different spots in the block where the stadium is located. Every spot had a team of doctors, including a physician, surgeon and paramedical staff. Apart from this, the authority also alerted private ambulance agencies located in south Mumbai. They also kept more than 1,200 bottles of blood in various groups and a private blood bank on standby.

“Apart from this system, we also kept 100 beds vacant and ready at JJ and Nair hospital, GT hospital and St George’s hospital. All heads of department were at work along with a full staff. Every hour, we took reports from the location. Also we kept 15 operation tables from our hospital and 13 from Nair hospital reserved. The emergency department functioned as per routine,” said Dr TP Lahane, dean, JJ hospital.
