The Byculla police on Thursday arrested a Mazgaon-based homemaker for allegedly forcing a minor into prostitution. The girl, the police say, is a friend of her daughter. The arrested accused, Mumtaz Begum Mohammad Mulla, is a resident of Central Railway colony in Mazgaon.

According to the police, the 14-year-old victim and her mother used to stay in Mulla’s neighbourhood. The mother-daughter duo used to visit Mulla’s home frequently. Mulla suspected the girl for a theft in her house a few months ago.

“Mulla and the mother-daughter duo had a heated argument over the theft. After the incident, they had shifted to the Antop Hill area,” said a police officer. However, the victim used to visit her friend.

“A few days ago, when she visited Mulla’s home, the homemaker offered her a drink laced with a sedative. Mulla then made someone rape her. Later, Mulla threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed it to anyone,” said the officer.

When she did not get back home, her mother lodged a police complaint. On Thursday, she was found at Nariman Point and was sent to a children’s home. Home officer Dhanashree Ghadge lodged a police complaint after she narrated her ordeal.
“She also revealed that she was sent to Nagpada and Ooty by Mulla for prostitution,” said the police officer.
