A Juhu based woman, who belonged to a businessman family was arrested by Malad police on Friday for allegedly conning her friend of diamond ornaments worth Rs 82 lakhs.
A Juhu based woman, who belonged to a businessman family was arrested by Malad police on Friday for allegedly conning her friend of diamond ornaments worth Rs 82 lakhs.
The accused has been identified, Neetu Arora, 40, who resides in JVPD scheme at Juhu and her family is into textile business.
According to police, the victim, Arati Mehara, is into the diamond business and resides in Yugdharma tower near Inorbit mall in Malad (west). Mehara lodged compliant on Thursday and and said that she knew Arora since past two years.
Mehara "Initially Arora purchased diamond ornaments worth Rs 5 lakhs in January last year that amount she has paid immediately. After few days she also took diamond ornaments worth Rs 25 lakhs which she also paid on time," said a police office.
"In February 2011, Arora also approached victim and said she had to attend family wedding so needs more ornaments and bought diamonds worth Rs 1.37 crore between January and February month but she gave only Rs 55 lakhs to her," said sub-inspector Manohar Harpude. "It appears that initially Arora paid cash on proper time because she probably wanted to win her trust" said victim in her statement to police.
"Victim alleges that Arora then started avoid paying pending amount Rs 82 lakhs. But after when she approached her several times she gave her cheque worth Rs 82 lakhs, which was pending" added another officer.
"When the victim went to the bank to withdrow the cheque, found the bank account had closed. She then approached to Malad police station and lodged compliant against Arora" said Harpude.
"Following on the compliant we verified the fact and arrested Arora for cheating and breach of trust on Friday and will produced her in court on Saturday" said police officer.
