Following rise in lake levels,  the BMC has decided to supply 100 million litres more water per day to the city from Saturday. This means, the water supply goes up to 3,200 million litres per day (MLD), effectively bringing down the water cut to 7%. Also, if good rainfall continues over the catchments, the cuts could be completely lifted by September.

BMC commissioner Swadhin Kshatriya said the reduction in water cuts is the civic body’s gift to Mumbaikars on the occasion of Independence Day. “If the rains continue to be good, the BMC will supply 400 MLD more water to the city,” he said. Additional municipal commissioner Anil Diggikar said, “The water stock in lakes is still short compared to the last few years, except last year. The shortfall is about 7.5%.”

The BMC has also decided to start a water recycling plant at Ghatkopar and has appointed Crisil to prepare a feasibility report for the plant. Kshatriya said the BMC has issued circulars to implement rainwater harvesting in buildings.
