Chances of a pre-poll alliance between the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress for the municipal elections in Pune seem to be remote as deputy chief minister and NCP leader, Ajit Pawar, called upon voters to ensure that the NCP comes to power on its own in Pune, for the city to develop.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Hospital in Wanavdi on Sunday.

Pawar said that since he is handling the finance minister’s portfolio, he would ensure that Pune gets a good deal for development. However, he needed the people to ensure that the NCP gets elected to power for the party to implement projects it has proposed.

“In Pimpri-Chinchwad and Navi Mumbai, the NCP got elected by majority and that’s why we don’t face any problems in implementing projects. The senior party leadership decides on a development project and within no time it is implemented. In other areas, where the NCP doesn’t get a majority, it becomes difficult to implement all projects as there are many opposition parties and not all might agree to our ideology,” said Pawar.

He pointed to the bus rapid transport system (BRTS), which hasn’t taken off over arguments such as the side on which the bus door should open. “Some say left side, while others say right side and the project didn’t take off. We appeal to people to ensure they vote for the NCP, so that these silly arguments don’t come in the way of development,” he said.

Though both the Congress and the NCP had announced a pre-poll alliance for Mumbai, Nashik and Thane civic polls earlier last week, no such announcement was made for the polls in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. While in Pimpri-Chinchwad, the NCP is in power on its own, in Pune it shares power with the Congress.
However, over the years, the alliance has run into rough weather with local leaders hinting at going their own way for the polls.
