Abhinav Bindra’s feat in the men’s 10m-air rifle event — the first ever individual Olympic gold won by an Indian — has not only come as good news for shooting enthusiasts, but has also given a deserving boost to the sport at the school level.
To promote the sport, Father Agnel’s Multipurpose School and Junior College, Vashi, has decided to set up a shooting range at its indoor sports complex. The institute is investing around Rs3 crore on the sports complex which will also include a 25x21 metre swimming pool.
“Talks of constructing the shooting range were taking place since several months. However, Bindra’s gold medal has given us a boost. Along with my architect and civil engineer, I have already visited Olympian Suma Shirur’s shooting range constructed by her husband Siddharth Shirur,” said
Father Saturnino Almeida, managing director, Agnel’s Technical Complex.
The shooting range housing 10 lanes of 10m rifle will initially cater only to the beginners and then gradually as the students’ progress in the sport, advance facilities and equipment will be provided. “The construction work on the swimming pool and the sports complex is expected to finish by December. The shooting range will be ready a couple of months after that,” added Father Almeida.
Avalon Heights International School, Vashi, has already constructed a shooting range. “The construction work is done and we will soon starting the training sessions for the students,” said Dev Naidu, physical education teacher.
When contacted, Siddharth Shirur, who has also built the Karnala Sports Academy range at Panvel and the Oases range in Jaipur, said, “I have extended my help to Father Agnel’s School because my wife and I are ex-students of the school. The architect will send me his plan and then I will help them in designing the shooting range.”
