In the era where farming no longer remains profitable and the number of farmer suicides is increasing, it is hard to imagine urban youth take agriculture as a profession. However, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has taken an initiative to motivate Gen Next entrepreneurs to present their ‘agri-business plans’, which can be pursued by the farmers or different governments.

TERI’s ‘Krishi Dhan’, supported by the governments of Maharashtra and Goa, is India’s first of its kind initiative, committed to the sustainable development of the agriculture sector. With the central theme of ‘green-to-evergreen’, the intention is to introduce eco-friendly and energy efficient concepts to ensure sustainable agriculture.

The organisation has called the college-going urban youth to come up with eco-friendly project ideas for the agricultural sector, which will open up business opportunities in the agri-sector. “We have initiated this project to provide farmers with alternative opportunities to earn money,” said Anand Lalwani, regional coordinator, TERI-Maharashtra.

The young entrepreneurs from management educational institutions are being asked to tap the varied business opportunities in the modern sectors of agriculture, such as finance, agri-tourism, agri-technology, renewable energy.

The students will present their plans for the agri sector to an eminent panel of jury members comprising senior representatives of corporate, academia and government at Welingkar Institute of Management on March 1. The best five agri-business plans will be selected for implementation.
