In a meeting held at Sena Bhavan on Saturday, Shiv Sena’s executive president Uddhav Thackeray claimed chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has lost credibility due to his involvement in PV Thomas’ appointment as the chief vigilance commissioner (CVC) and the people of Konkan will not believe his claims about the Jaitapur nuclear project. He added that the reactor leak in Japan has proved the government claims false.

Thackeray was addressing a meeting of Sena leaders and locals from Ratangiri who are against the nuclear plant.

Thackeray reiterated his strong opposition to the project and questioned the chief minister’s honesty. He said that if Chavan can hide information about Thomas from the prime minister while appointing him as the CVC, he can go to any extent in making false claims about the project.

Thackeray added that Chavan claims the project is important and does not cause any damage to the people in the vicinity, but people cannot afford to believe the person has lied recently.

Thackeray said that Chavan has been sent to Maharashtra on contract (by giving him supari) to implement the project.

"The chief minister has been claiming that the plant would be so strong that even a strike of an aircraft would not be able to cause any damage. He is talking about the attack from the skies, but what about natural calamities that occur like the one we recently witnessed in case of the nuclear plant reactors in Japan. It has proved the CM claims to be false," he said.

Attacking industries minister and arch rival of the party Narayan Rane for his alleged high handedness, Thackeray said that chief minister should beware of his colleague.

"His attempts to diminish the opposition to the N-plant in the Konkan will some day lead to an outcry beyond control," he said. Thackeray also compared Rane with nuclear waste and advised Chavan to clean the waster around him first.

Thackeray spoke about holding a mass rally near the Jaitapur plant to support the villagers who have been opposing the project. He said only local people have the right to decide the fate of the project.

Sena leader Subhash Desai said that history has numerous instances where the projects opposed by the people did not see the light of the day.

"Be it Singur in West Bengal, Vedanta in Orrisa or SEZ in Raigad, the governments had to cancel them under the public pressure," he added.
