Two college students died  in the early hours of Thursday after their bike lost control and hit a divider near Dahanukar wadi  bus stop in Kandivli west.

The deceased, Chintan Sedani, 26, a second year computer engineering student in Somaiya College, and Jayesh Bhagat, 22, an animation student, are residents of Anand Sarita building, Anand Nagar, Kandivli west.

According to police, the students died due to brain haemorrhage and had multiple head injuries. “They were not wearing helmets and their skulls were smashed in the impact which killed them instantly,” said Surendra Jaiswal, senior police inspector, Kandivli police station. “Sedani was driving, while Bhagat was riding pillion. We are suspecting that the bike was speeding at between 100 and 120 kmph.”

In a similar incident in Kandivli east last week, an 18-year-old college student was killed due to head injuries and his classmate was grievously injured after the bike they were riding went out of control and hit a divider at the Thakur flyover. Police said the student was thrown off and his head dashed against the divider which led to his death. He was also not wearing a helmet.

The police say that despite periodic helmet checking drives across the city and a campaign that started last year to make people aware of how useful helmets are, cases of driving without helmets and rash driving have been on the rise, especially amongst students.

“We fine about 500 people driving without helmet on a daily basis. This is not to get money from law breakers, but to make them realise that breaking traffic rule does not only result in loss of money, but also their lives,” said SS Solunke, deputy commissioner of police, traffic.

“Given the limited force, it is not possible for traffic policemen to be present at every corner of the city. It is for the citizens to realise the value of their lives. There should be proper awareness among bikers and they should wear helmets in order to remain safe. Traffic rules should be taught starting from schools, colleges and also be imparted to parents,” said Solunke.
