In two separate incidents of rash and negligent driving, two people, including a senior citizen, died while two others sustained heavy injuries. One incident happened on the Eastern Express highway in Vikhroli, the other in Mulund (East) near the Campus hotel.

The police said that the first incident took place at 11.25am at Vikhroli when a speeding Thane-bound Maruti Swift hit Achala Godeshwar, 39, while she was crossing the road. The police said that she was crossing the road under the foot over-bridge when the car hit her. Passers-by rushed her to the hospital, where she was declared dead before admission.

The police have arrested the driver Ketan Savla, 54.

In the Mulund incident, a 92-year-old man died on-the-spot when a speeding Maruti SX4 collided with a Tata Nano opposite the Campus hotel. The police said that the deceased Govind Mahale and two others were crossing the road when the incident happened.

Due to the car’s impact, Mahale sustained severe injuries and died on the spot, while the other two were admitted to Fortis hospital and Sushray hospital, the police said. Senior inspector Shreemant Ghule of Navghar police station said that they are investigating further.

Over the past year, the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority has built several over-bridges on the highway. The police, however, complained that inspite of that pedestrians continue to risk their lives by crossing the road.
