The police on Thursday arrested two students of a catering college for allegedly hitting a traffic police constable near Milan subway in Santa Cruz (West) on Tuesday night while speeding with their vehicle. The accused have been identified as Sabyasachi Nishank and Sagar Kumar. Nishank is the son of a deputy general manager of Reserve Bank of India, Byculla branch.

Even as the constable, Kishan Darade, is still undergoing treatment in a hospital for his injuries, the arrest of Nishank has revealed that the Honda CR-V that he was driving, is in fact, a stolen vehicle.

According to police, Nishank, a student of Dadar Catering College, who was driving the white coloured vehicle at high speed, jumped the signal on Tuesday night. When Darade, on duty near the subway, tried to stop the vehicle, he was dashed. “Darade sustained grievous injuries on his head and was rushed to Nanavati Hosptial,” a police officer said. “A few bikers tried to chase the vehicle, but Nishank managed to give them the slip.

However, alert pedestrians took pictures of the car’s number on their mobile phones.”

On Wednesday night, the Juhu police intercepted the vehicle during a nakabandi. Vasant Bhandari, a senior executive with a private company, was behind the wheels. “On interrogation, Bhandari told the police that the car belongs to his friend Nishank,” said assistant police inspector Vilas More of Santa Cruz police station.

After his arrest, Nishank told the police that he was in a hurry to attend his girlfriend’s birthday on that night. “After hitting the policeman on duty, they went and celebrated the girl’s birthday at Bandra,” said another police officer.

Following investigation, the police found that the vehicle was stolen in November last year from near PVR cinema in Juhu. “Nishank told us that he was not aware that his car was a stolen vehicle. He had purchased it from one Ramesh Sinha for Rs22 lakh,” said deputy commissioner of police KMM Prasanna.

Further investigation is on, said the officer.
