After three weeks of negligence, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has finally decided to take the responsibility for the proper upkeep of dog pound for stray dogs in the city.

Three agencies — Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Latur (SPCA), Animal Protection Club of Karad and Animal Rights Fund of Bengaluru — have been appointed to look after the dog pound next to the Naidu Hospital on the RBM Road for treatment.

DNA had reported about the deteriorating condition of the dogs in the pound due to the indifference shown by the PMC officials in its November 9 report ‘Dog days: 60 battle starvation, disease’.

The decision was taken following a meeting of the volunteers of the pound with the PMC assistant health officer, Dr Dilip Jagtap, on Monday.

Speaking to DNA, Jagtap said that the decision was taken in the recent standing committee meeting. “The work order will be issued to the agencies in the next two days,” he said.

After the expiry of the contract of the Vet Society for Animal and Rural Development, the agency which worked at the pound till October, the dogs were left without care and basic amenities. While the SPCA will be taking care of the dogs brought to the pound, the other two NGOs will be working at the zonal ward level.

Though the PMC has appointed the NGOs to take the responsibility of the stray dogs in the city, the volunteers working in the pound are not convinced with the decision.

“It is still not clear why has the PMC failed to appoint a Pune-based NGO for the job. For taking care of the stray dogs of the city, an agency needs to have the geographical knowledge of the city. The PMC-appointed agencies lack this basic need,” said Ashwini Dasgupta, who has been volunteering in the pound for two weeks.
