Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray had to call a meeting on Friday to keep the party corporators united for the mayoral election. However, the absence of a few prominent corporators showed that everything was not well in the Sena.
Addressing the corporators at the Shiv Sena Bhavan, Thackeray said, “Vote unitedly for our candidate Shraddha Jadhav. Do not remain absent. Also, ensure a win for Ramdas Kadam to the legislative council,” he said.
However, the absence of Snehal Jadhav and Shubhada Gudhekar, who were front runners for the mayor’s post, fuelled speculations about their unhappiness. Corporators Mangala Kate, Raja Chougule and Tawaji Gorule were also absent. Sena’s two associate members in BMC, Akhil Bharatiya Sena’s Geeta Gawali and Vandana Gawali, too had skipped the meeting for “personal reasons”.
“There was a rumour that some corporators were in touch with the MNS,” a source in Sena said.
Standing committee chairman Ravindra Waikar said: “As voting for the mayor’s post will be done by counting heads, we do not have any fear of losing votes.”
