The family members of city Congress president, Abhay Chhajed, were alleged assaulted by a 27-year-old computer engineer in a fit of rage, in front of the former’s residence in Kothrud on Thursday morning.

The former employee of a city-based software company, Ankit Chhajed, was armed with knives kept in his socks and in the bag he was carrying.

The Congress leader’s 82-year-old father, Bhagchand alias Bapu, and sister-in-law Nirmala (41) suffered injuries to their hands.
The youth also attacked Dilip Kshirsagar, the priest of Shri Ramdev Baba Mandir near Chhajed’s house.

The injured trio was taken to Dhanwantari Hospital near Paud Road. Later, Kshirsagar was admitted to Poona Hospital and is expected to undergo surgery on his hand on Friday.

Deputy commissioner of police Dnyaneshwar Phadtare said that Ankit hails from Rajasthan and resides with his parents in Vapi, Gujarat.

“He became mentally depressed after losing his job. We are probing why he attacked the Congress leader’s family members,” the DCP said.

The victims thought that Ankit had come to worship at the temple. “When Nirmala was assaulted, Chhajed’s father tried to save her and was attacked. Later, the temple priest was also assaulted when he tried to intervene,” the police said.

The suspect was staying in Wakad for two years before he was sacked from a company in June this year. He came to Pune on Saturday night. The police sources said that the youth held the Congress leader responsible for loss of his job.

Abhay’s son, Anuj, 26, who nabbed the suspect said, “I was having breakfast when I heard my aunt pleading for help. I found Ankit running with a knife and trying to enter our residence. After attacking my grandfather, he tried to attack by mother.

“But our two pet dogs pounced on him. Later, I caught hold of him and snatched the knife from his hand. He had a few knives hidden in his socks. For 15 minutes he was interacting with me and I found him very frustrated. He was continuously repeating that he wanted to kill my father,” Anuj said.

Although the Congress leader could not be contacted, Abhay’s brother, Mahindra, denied the allegations made by Ankit.
