A day after two TDR-TB patients died, the Centre and the state government on Saturday decided to isolate the patients of Total Drug Resistance (TDR) tuberculosis and to prepare a quick action plan on the management of the disease.

The centre tuberculosis division team, which handles the tuberculosis management programme in India will now come to the city on Monday instead of Wednesday. The decision was taken in the meeting held on Saturday, where Union Health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was briefed about the TDR-TB cases.

In the meeting, which was attended by the state and civic officials involved in tuberculosis management in the state and city, it was decided that the JJ hospital laboratory will start with drug sensitivity tests from Monday  and BMC will have its own lab in three months’ time.

Suresh Shetty, the state health minister said, “The identified cases of TDR-TB will be isolated in Sanatorium at Jaisinghpur, Sangli soon.  The state government will give free treatment and take care of their diet. The union government has agreed to help us with free kits for tests and drugs.”

The state government has also decided to send notification to the private hospitals and private practitioners to report the TDR-TB cases to the authorities.

“We will have surveillance system in place for TDR-TB like we had for malaria management,” said Shetty.

Welcoming the decision of the government, a senior doctor specialising in TB treatment in the city said, “Isolation of TDR-Tb patient is important as the patient will only spread the TDR-TB strains. It has the capacity to become epidemic if not handled on time as no medicines work on such patients. TB is no more a poor man’s disease.”
