Affiliated to the Mumbai University and approved by the AICTE, Durgadevi Saraf Institute of Management is one of the 15 new management institutes sanctioned by the state government in Maharashtra.
Mumbai is all set to get a new medical college in the western suburbs, announced chief minister Ashok Chavan at the inauguration of a new management institute — Durgadevi Saraf Institute of Management (DSIMS) — at Malad on Sunday. Affiliated to the Mumbai University and approved by the AICTE, DSIMS is one of the 15 new management institutes sanctioned by the state government in Maharashtra.
“The initiative has been undertaken to curb the dearth of management institutes in the state,” said Rajesh Tope, minister of state for higher and technical education. While talking about autonomy and flexibility in higher education, Tope said it is high time that state universities offer incubation centres on the lines of the ones in IITs, Harvard and Stanford University.
While a committee has been formed on bifurcation of universities, Chavan said that as the existing state universities are loaded with affiliated colleges, which affect the quality of higher education in the state, there is an urgent need to bifurcate universities.
Speaking about the need to improve quality of higher education, Tope added, “Accreditation will be made compulsory for all affiliated colleges and the government is proposing a law to be drafted in this regard. As per this proposed law, grants will only be allocated to these accredited institutions.”
DSIMS will have a ‘glocal orientation programme’, which will include student immersion programmes in rural areas where they will get a chance to understand the challenges of rural markets.
For global exposure, international study tours have been also chalked out as part of the programme. DSIMS has also set-up a management development centre, which will help the B school interact with corporates through management development programmes.
