While the railway police have beefed up security to curb boys from performing dangerous stunts in moving trains, two youths allegedly beat a railway policeman with a belt when the latter pulled them up for performing stunts while standing on the footboard of a train.

On Sunday evening, constables Uday Salgaonkar and DA Suryawanshi of the Borivli railway police boarded the first-class compartment of a Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST)-bound train from Thane station.

After the train left Mulund station, they noticed Govandi residents Mohsin Mohalkar, 20, and Shah Rukh Khan, 19, hanging precariously from the train. The duo allegedly also whistled at women in passing trains and screamed profanities at co-commuters.

Mohalkar, a Class 12 dropout, is employed as a salesman at a Vashi mall, while Khan is pursuing his second-year bachelor of management study at a Chembur college and works at a call centre.

“We showed them our identity cards and warned them not to perform stunts as it was dangerous. But, they were in no mood to listen us and we returned to our seats. They continued jumping around the compartment,” said Salgaonkar.

“When the train was approaching Ghatkopar station, suddenly one of the men removed his belt and started hitting me. I was shocked. Before we could react, they jumped off the train even as it was slowing. We chased them and managed to catch them outside the station with help from the public and police,” added Salgaonkar.

The Kurla railway police booked Mohalkar and Khan under sections 353 (assault to deter a public servant to discharge his duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant to discharge his duty) of the Indian Penal Code and section 147 (travelling without a ticket) of the Indian Railway Act.

“Mohalkar and Khan were released on bail of Rs10,000 each on Monday. The CST railway court directed them to visit the Kurla railway police station every Sunday between 4pm and 5pm until the charge sheet has been filed against them,” said senior police inspector Shivaji Dhumal of the Kurla railway police.
