Crimes against women are being discussed in the state legislature, stricter laws are being mulled upon, but it remains to be seen if this will help curb the atrocities. For now, they continue unabated.
A 40-year-old man from Dahanu has been arrested for allegedly raping and murdering his 45-year-old neighbour who had often spurned his advances.
The accused, Nilesh Gavit, hanged the woman’s body to the ceiling fan to make it appear like a case of suicide. He was arrested on Sunday evening.
Gavit, a bachelor, often stalked the married woman despite being spurned, said the police.
On Sunday, Gavit waylaid the woman and threatened to harm her family members if she did not accompany him to his house. He forcibly took her to his house where he consumed alcohol and also forced her to drink. He raped her and, in a drunken stupor, banged her head to the wall until she dropped unconscious, said assistant inspector Bharat Choudhary of Kasa police station which has jurisdiction over the area.
The police said Gavit has told them that a few hours later, when he sobered down, he panicked on seeing her unconscious. Taking her to be dead, he hanged the body to the ceiling fan. Empty liquor bottles have been recovered from Gavit’s residence, said assistant inspector Choudhary.
The preliminary findings of a post-mortem done at the government-run primary health centre in
Kasa states that the woman’s skull was fractured and severe blood loss possibly led to instant death.
People in the locality who noticed the woman’s body informed the police, especially since Gavit was nowhere to be found. “From the circumstances in which the body was found hanging, it was clear that it was not suicide but murder. We found Gavit in a village in Kasa,” said another official.
Gavit, who has been booked for rape and murder, will be produced in Dahanu court on Tuesday.
