In a freak accident, a 35-year-old woman died after being hit by a speeding water tanker in Malad (West). The incident took place on Tuesday morning when Sangeeta Mahadik was returning home from a hospital with her husband and son.

The police said that Sangeeta, a housewife and resident of Wasri Hill in Malad, is survived with her husband Raju and four children. Raju is employed in a workshop at Bombay Talkies.

She had been unwell since a few days and on Tuesday around 10.30am, she had gone to a nearby government hospital with Raju and her two-and-a-half-year-old son. After taking medicines from the hospital, they were on their way back home when Sangeeta started to vomit.

“She went to a nearby garbage bin and was vomiting there, when a speeding tanker hit her from behind, killing her on the spot. A huge mob gathered at there. Fearing assault at the hands of the angry mob, the tanker driver Rajan Chavan tried to escape but people at the spot chased and caught him,” said an officer from the Malad police station. He added that Chavan was then handed over to the Malad police by the mob. Meanwhile, Sangeeta was taken to the Bhagwati Hospital but was declared dead before arrival.

“We have arrested Chavan on charges of causing death due to rash and negligent driving. He was coming from Mulund Link Road and was on his way to SV Road when the mishap took place. He was trying to flee from the spot but the local people caught him,”said senior inspector R Prabhu

“We have seized the water tanker and had also sent his blood samples for medical examination to ascertain whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. However, medical reports show that he was not drunk,”he added.

The officer further said that they will produce Chavan in a Borivli court on Wednesday for police remand.
