The physical education teacher who was arrested on Monday for allegedly sodomising a six-year-old student last week had almost got away. The police searched for him high and low for an hour before nabbing him.

Shivajirao Tawde had reportedly given the wrong residential address to the Malabar Hill school where he taught, which the cops used to hunt for him.

According to police sources, after the boy’’s parents filed a complaint against Tawde on Sunday, the order was simple: Make sure that the teacher doesn’t get a whiff of it or else he would leg it. The police got Tawde's address from the school.

“The address was of a hutment in the Ghatkopar area and the landmark was of a Hanuman temple. On reaching there, we found it to be a maze, as there are nine Hanuman temples. The area was crowded and is connected with several by-lanes. After a search for more than an hour, we found his residence,” said a police officer.

“We told Tawde that we wanted his cooperation in the case and drove him to the police station. It was only after he reached there that he realised that an FIR had been registered against him and he was placed under arrest. We suspect that Tawde had intentionally given the misleading address to the school. He hails from Satara district and we are in touch with the Satara police to ascertain if any criminal complaint was filed with them against Tawde.” The police will check Tawde’s credentials and verify the documents he gave to the school.

Tawde had put much thinking into his plan, said sources. He had noticed on several occasions that the boy used to seek permission from teachers to go to the toilet a few minutes after recess. “Also, while classes were on, nobody loitered in the corridors and Tawde took advantage of this,” said another officer.

The police have sent the clothes of Tawde and victim to the Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis.

“The forensic experts could find nothing in the toilet, as it gets cleaned every day and same is the case with the clothes. But the victim's statement is very crucial and is good enough to get him convicted,” said the officer.
