It has not even been four months after the concept of ‘society cops’ was introduced in the western suburbs and 6,778, senior citizens have already registered with the police and details of over 7,765 servants been collected by the police. The officials state that collecting details of the household help and servants has helped in bringing down the crime rate.

The pilot project by western suburbs police, and later adopted by police stations across the city, was started after there was a series of cases of senior citizens being robbed and murdered. It was found that in many cases, the servants were directly or indirectly involved. “About 80% of the job is complete,” said Pratap Dighavkar, deputy commissioner of police.

‘Society Cops’ was started in July, wherein each of over 1,400 constables from the eight police stations in the western suburbs were asked adopt at least seven societies from their jurisdiction.

They were required to remain in touch the with the office bearers and other members of the society and keep a tab on the new servants, security guards and other help who were hired and seek their details. “The constable is put in charge of his adopted societies, and any crime reported there is his responsibility,” said Dighavkar.

If the figures are any indication, then the project has already started yielding results. The number of crimes registered during January-May was 2,146. In comparison, the period between June-November 20, the number of crime registered dropped to 1,728; a difference of 418 cases in less than five months.

The officials said that though the project has so far been successful, there have been many instances when people have refused to give details about their servants.
