A social worker on Tuesday helped the railway police to nab a thief who would hide behind a railway pole and hit commuters standing on the footboard to loot their valuables.

“The thief, identified as Rajesh Dhere, 25, was booked under section 394 (robbery).  The police also recovered a cell phone stolen from the social worker,” said Shivaji Dhumal, senior police inspector, of Kurla railway police station.

Dhumal added that Dhere had been arrested earlier by the Thane railway police in 2008 for similar offences.

Santosh Kajrolkar, a social worker, 40, said: “I was travelling to Bhandup on Tuesday. When the train was reaching Bhandup station, I was standing on the footboard and speaking on my mobile. Suddenly, a man, hiding behind a pole, hit my hand with a stick and my cell phone slipped out of my hand. I noticed that the man picked up my mobile.”
Kajrolkar informed the railway police at Bhandup, and rushed to the site, along with two railway constables. They managed to nab Dhere.
