A week after new resident doctors joined civic hospitals, the authorities are still trying hard to provide space for them. While Sion hospital will be shifting the undergraduate students to Vikhroli civic school and making space for 147 new resident doctors, KEM hospital has managed to find space in Kalachowky area.

DNA had earlier reported how 16 resident doctors have been living in a 10x10 feet room. Earlier the authorities at Sion hospital were planning to shift the resident doctors to a civic school in Vikhroli, which is currently not in use. However, now the authorities have decided to shift the undergraduate students to the school building instead of the resident doctors. “Resident doctors are need to be in or around the hospital in case of emergency. We are creating space for the new resident doctors,” said a senior doctor from Sion hospital. But the civil work people are yet to visit the Vikhroli school and see to the repair work.

To add to the woes of space-starved resident doctors, the ceilings of the quarters are falling apart. “Few days back, the part of the ceiling came off in the badminton court where the authorities are presently thinking of accommodating the newly recruited resident doctors. We have complained but so far no repairs have been conducted,” said another resident doctor.

Dr Pankaj Nalawade, president, MARD said, “While the situation is better in KEM and Nair hospital, the shortage is acute in Sion hospital,”
