Two of the five members of parliament (MPs) of Pune district have come out in support of the Jan Lokpal Bill.

They voiced their support when members of India Against Corruption (IAC) held sit-in protests outside their homes to press for passing the bill on Monday.

Pune district elects four MPs to the Lok Sabha and one to the Rajya Sabha.

Shiv Sena MPs Shivajirao Patil from Bhosari and Gajanan Babar from Maval have issued letters declaring their support to Anna Hazare’s version of the Lokpal bill.

“I have always supported Anna in his movements against corruption. The Lokpal Bill will help also curb corruption and that is why I am supporting it,” Patil said.

But, he quickly added that it was this was his personal view, and not the party’s “Shiv Sena always supports any fight against corruption, so indirectly we are supporting Anna,” he added.

Babar echoed similar sentiments when IAC volunteers staged a sit-in protest outside his Chinchwad residence.

Supriya Sule, Baramati MP from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the daughter of Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, maintained ambivalence on the issue.

“We, as a party, strongly support a stringent Lokpal bill. With the bills in front of the standing committee, only after discussions that a proper bill would framed,” Sule  told DNA.

Around 100 volunteers sat outside Congress MP from Pune Suresh Kalmadi’s house at Karvenagar.

The house was shut even as police maintained heavy bandobast. Kalamadi has been arrested by the CBI in connection with the Commonwealth Games scam. “Though the MP is in jail, this protest is symbolic and is being held all over the country,” said Deepak Bharadia, a member of the IAC.

Bharadia announced that they will hold similar protests outside the residences of Sule and Rajya Shabha MP Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday.
