It is Narayan Rane versus the Shiv Sena again, and again people have “gone missing”. It has happened before, and it happened on Sunday.

Congress corporator Presila Kadam, a close aide of Rane, will take on Shiv Sena’s Shraddha Jadhav for the city mayor’s post on Tuesday. And on Sunday evening, the Sena corporator from Versova went missing.

The corporator, Chhaya Bhanji, and her husband, Chandrakant Bhanji, were last seen by around 8 pm on Sunday. Unable to trace the duo, son Punit Bhanji registered a missing complaint at the Versova police station. In his statement to the police, Punit said that his mother had left their Andheri home at 7 pm, without specifying where she was going. An hour later, she rang up her residence. Husband Chandrakant took the call. Without telling anyone what his wife had told him, Chandrakant, too, left home .

“My parents have been untraceable since,” Punit told the cops while registering the missing complaint.

The Sena camp accused Rane supporters of playing dirty politics. Rane’s son, Nitesh, trashed their allegation. He said that his father’s supporters were not to be blamed. “She (Chhaya) probably did not want to be seen with the Sainiks ahead of the elections, and left on her own will,” he said.

Sena leader Sunil Prabhu said that the Sainiks were trying to trace Chhaya. Another Sena corporator, Kshitija Pujare from Kandivli, too, was reported missing. Party leader Vinod Ghosalkar, however, played the issue down. “Kshitija Pujare is in touch with us. She will vote for the Sena on Tuesday.” Nitesh, however, doubted it. He said that apart from Chhaya and Kshitija, there were other dissidents in the Sena camp as well.

Sena sources said late on Monday evening that Pujare called on party chief Balasaheb Thackeray at Matoshree. She would disclose the plot that led to her disappearance.

During the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, Narayan Rane’s cousin, Ankush, had gone missing from Sindhudurg. His body was found days later. Rane’s other son, Nilesh, who was fighting the polls against Sena leader Suresh Prabhu, had accused the Sena of kidnapping and murdering Ankush.

During a by-election in Malvan in 2005, when Rane was elected after joining the Congress, Shiv Sena leader Ramesh Govekar went missing. Sena had accused Rane of kidnapping him. There has been no trace of Govekar ever since.
