Actor Shiney Ahuja, accused of raping his 20-year-old maid, was released on bail by the Bombay high court on Thursday, after over three months in custody.

Stating that the “possibility of (the actor) tampering with evidence cannot be ruled out”, justice AP Deshpande granted bail to the actor on the condition that he leaves Mumbai and stays in Delhi.

Shiney may be released on Saturday after formalities of furnishing the bail bond of Rs50,000 in the Sewri fast-track court are complete.

The court ordered him to provide surety of the same amount but granted him three weeks to arrange for it.

Shiney’s wife, Anupam, film director Ashok Pandit, filmmaker Pritish Nandy and family friends were present in court.

The actor has to inform the Oshiwara police and jail superintendent of his residence in Delhi and visit the nearest police station in Delhi every week, the court ordered.

The court allowed him to come to Mumbai for hearings in the fast-track court, where his trial is yet to begin. The court also ordered him not to offer inducements directly or indirectly to witnesses.

Anupam had left her job as a marketing executive after Shiney’s arrest.
