A 68-year-old woman, Bharti Shah, was found strangled to death in her Juhu flat on Monday. Two servants she had hired recently are missing and are believed to be behind the murder. The police suspect robbery to be the motive and have launched a search for them.

Police officers said that the accused decamped with gold bangles and a necklace which the victim was wearing. “Two cupboards were found broken into. But so far, we don’t know what else has been stolen,” said additional commissioner of police (west region) Vishwas Nagre Patil.

Two days ago, Shah, who was living alone, had been asked to submit details of her servants, but she had failed to do so, said the Juhu police.

Police records show that Shah, an architect and a resident of Anand society, was an alumnus of JJ School of Arts. One of Shah’s relatives went to see her on Monday morning, as repeated calls to her telephone made on Sunday night had gone unanswered, and found her dead.

Initial investigation has revealed that Shah worked from home and needed a servant for household chores. “One servant was hired about four days ago. But he was inefficient, and Shah decided to hire one more. She asked the first servant to recommend someone,” said senior inspector Arun Bhagat.

“He recommended a friend of his, who was hired about two days ago.”

Investigators believe that both men had planned to getting hired one after another and then committing the crime. An officer said that “neither Shah’s neighbours, relatives nor the watchmen know anything about the servants”.

Relatives said Shah has two brothers and four sisters. One brother stays in the US and the others in Mumbai.
