MUMBAI: Sandeep Acharya won the Indian Idol 2 singing contest here on Saturday night.
 
Sandeep had an edge over NC Karunya earlier in the contest.
 
Sandeep was born on February 4, 1984, in Bikaner. The graduate with a Science degree has two sisters and a brother, according to the Indian Idol 2 web site.
 
Sandeep has the classic Indian playback singer`s voice and has often been compared to the great Udit Narayan of Indian playback.  He found a keen interest and love in Indian music from a tender age and has been training for a career in the same since then, the site said.
 
While his friends played and enjoyed themselves, Sandeep was focused on his career and was regular with his Riyaaz.
 
When asked what would he do on winning the Indian Idol 2 title, he had said that he would give back in return the same love and confidence the audience showered on him and take his family on a world tour, the Indian Idol 2 web site said.
Insiders had said that despite Karunya's popularity on the show, Sandeep was way ahead of him in the polls.
 
The voting for the final result started three weeks ago and continued till 8.40 pm on Saturday.
 
The winner takes a Rs 1 crore contract from Sony BMG and will take home a Maruti Baleno car.
 
Indian Idol’s judges were choreographer/director Farah Khan, playback singer Sonu Nigam and music director Anu Malik.
 
The show hosts were actor Aman Yatan Verma and Mini Mathur.
