While cases of rape, motor vehicle thefts and house break-ins during day saw an increase last year, as compared to 2010, the crime list doesn’t end there. Statistics of the criminal offences registered by the city police have revealed that cases of robbery and dacoity have also increased in the city, with these cases reaching their highest figure mark in the last five years.

According to the city police statistics, there were 464 cases of robberies and dacoities across the city registered last year, which is highest since 2007. These cases were lowest in 2007, with 292 cases being registered then. The detection rate in these cases last year is 84 percent, while the property recovery percentage highest at 43 percent in the past five years.

Asked why these cases have increased in the city, a crime branch officer said, “Earlier, whenever a chain-snatching incident would take place wherein a weapon was found to have been used, it would be registered as a plain chain-snatching case. However, now we are registering these cases under the robbery sections, thereby resulting in a fall in the graph of chain-snatching cases, and at the same time, an increase in robbery cases.”

He added that, this was not burking of cases, but the intention was to get maximum punishment for the accused persons as per the law. “If a weapon is used to commit a chain-snatching, then it is more of a robbery then a chain-snatching,” the officer said.

Even the statistics of Mumbai police revealed that there was increase in the seizure of firearms last year, as compared to 2010.

While 271 firearms were seized in 2010, last year, 299 firearms were seized in the city. The police sources claimed that most of the weapons seized were country-made pistols and were sourced from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
