Wasim Sheikh, 18, defies the prototype of a young criminal. When the police caught this youth from an affluent family based in upmarket Colaba for stealing a credit card and using it to buy a laptop, they were baffled. The businessman father of Wasim had even handed over money to him to buy one. It was for the thrill of the crime, it turned out later.

Student of a prestigious college in the city, Wasim was arrested by the NM Joshi Marg police on June 4. He has admitted to stealing the credit card of Sweta Sabrawala (name changed), a civil engineer in a reputed Worli-based construction company, and then buying the laptop using it.

He has been charged with theft, cheating and forgery and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by the Bhoiwada metropolitan magistrate’s court, said sub-inspector PS Kalekar.

The forgery came to light on the night of April 23 when the victim received an SMS from the bank mentioning that there was a purchase of Rs56,000 on her credit card. Shocked, she started looking for the card and found it missing from her bag.

The next day, she lodged a complaint of theft and misuse of her credit card. She also told the police that she had last used her card at a restaurant in the Phoenix Mills compound on April 23.
Investigations revealed that the purchase was made at an electronics shop in Big Bazaar at Lower Parel, said Kalekar. The police collected the CCTV footage of the day and the buyer’s feedback form mentioning the name and mobile phone number of the buyer.

The mobile number turned out to be that of Ajay Sutar (name changed). After a look at the CCTV footage, Sutar identified the buyer as Wasim, his neighbour in the Colaba building, said Kalekar.

During interrogation, Wasim said he did not want to cheat anybody. He just did it for thrill, the police said.
