Remaining reservations in BMC for 2012 polls announced

Ahead of the 2012 civic elections, top leaders of ruling party Shiv Sena and opposition Congress and NCP in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation suffered a jolt as their wards have fallen in reserved categories.

Ahead of the 2012 civic elections, top leaders of ruling party Shiv Sena and opposition  Congress and NCP in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) suffered a jolt as their wards have fallen in reserved categories.

The BMC today announced the remaining 214 seats through a lottery; it had on August 5 announced seats reserved for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

Of the total 227 seats, 114 seats will be reserved for women and 113 for men.

Of the 214 seats that were announced today, a total of 61 seats are reserved for OBC category of which 31 seats are for women and 30 for men. Altogether 153 seats will be reserved for the open category -- 77 for men and 76 for women.

The heavyweights who have lost their seats include Leader of Opposition Rajhans Singh, whose ward no 157 now falls under OBC reserved category (however Singh later became an MLA).

Ward no 170 of NCP leader Niyaz Vanu is reserved for the open category - women, BJP Group leader in BMC, Ashish Shelar's ward no 93 is reserved for OBC women, Chairman of the Improvement Committee Balchandra Shirsat's ward no 127 is reserved for women from the open category.

Ward no 49 of Congress Corporator Sameer Desai is reserved for women from the OBC category, Congress Corporator and BEST Committee member Ravi Raja's ward no 166 is reserved for OBC women, Ex-BEST Chairman and BJP Corporator Dilip Patel's ward no 52 is reserved for OBC women and Shiv Sena Corporator Rajul Patel's ward no 54 is reserved for OBC category - men.
