Devotees at the St John the Baptist Church or Seepz Church in Andheri celebrated the Sunday Feast on May 11 with fervour.

The day began with a traditional procession where devotees carried a statue of Jesus to be placed in the church for the mass.

At the end of the day, the statue was removed and taken to St John the Evangelist Church at Marol. Parish priest, Father Jerome Lobo of St John the Evangelist Church said, “As there is no one to look after the place, we prefer to remove everything from here.”

Ever since the Seepz project was declared as an SEZ, the church came under the notified area and entry to it was restricted to once a year.

Built by the Portuguese in 1579, the church was erected with the aim to begin settlements in vicinity of Condita village, now known as Kondivita. The church was abandoned after a plague in 1840. The Vicar of Kondivita then suggested the church be moved to Marol.

“We have requested to the authorities that the church be open to public at least once a week. However, nothing much has happened,” said Lobo. The devotees are also trying to get heritage status for the church. Biju Augustine of Save St John the Baptist Church, said, “We made several requests, but RTI reveals that nothing much has been done.”
Although commerce minister Kamal Nath along with then then MP Sunil Dutt had visited the church, nothing but a new gate was provided.
