One Secondary School Certificate (SSC) student was killed and his two friends and fellow students seriously injured when the Toyota Corolla car being driven illegally by one of them met with a gruesome accident on Nashik Phata Road on Sunday morning.

All three teenagers hail from well-off families. According to the Bhosari police, the speeding car went out of control and first hit the divider, then collided with an on-coming truck. The high-impact collision near the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) at 7 am smashed the car totally.

The deceased was identified as Shubham Popat Thopate (15), a resident of Adinathnagar, Bhosari. He died while undergoing treatment at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital.

His friends from Bhosari — Omkar Vasant Landage, 15, a resident of Landage Lane, and Swapnil Vitthal Dhawale, 17, a resident of Ramnagari — are undergoing treatment at the Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital in Chinchwad.

The truck driver, Sopan Jamadhar, suffered a leg fracture and another occupant of the truck, Ibrahim Baig, received minor injuries.

While Shubham’s father owns a workshop in Bhosari, Swapnil’s father is a well-known small-scale industrialist in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The police said the three friends from local schools were appearing for their SSC examination and were students of Chate coaching class in Bhosari.

On Sunday morning, Swapnil (whose father owns the car) allegedly ordered the driver to off, promising to return soon and proceeded to classes. They were facing difficulty in preparing for the geometry exam on Tuesday and wanted to reach their classes well before 10am to clear some doubts, according to the police.

The police said the car, which was being driven at high speed, took a sharp turn on the Bhosari-Nashik Phata Road, hit the divider and landed in the opposite lane, where it was hit by the on-coming truck. The car turned turtle while being dragged some 15 feet.

Constable Haribhau Bhavar, attached to the Bhosari police station, rushed to the spot and the severely injured trio was admitted to the YCM Hospital. “The students were alive and they gave me their parents’ contact numbers. Even Shubham, who died later, was interacting with me,” Bhavar said.

While Shubham was a student of Priyadarshani High School in Bhosari, Omkar and Swapnil are studying at Sant Sai High School, Bhosari.

Sudhir Sutar of the Bhosari branch of Chate coaching classes described the three as “brilliant students”. Omkar’s elder sister said her father had recently undergone heart bypass surgery. The family was keen that Omkar become a mechanical engineer, she said.

Deputy commissioner of police (zone III), Dnyaneshwar Chavan said, “It is not clear who was driving the car. Once it is clear, we will register a case against the boy. The picture will be clear only when the two survivors tell us. The police are looking for eye-witnesses.”
