The Nagri Hakka Suraksha Samiti (NHSS) had served a legal notice to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for its failure to provide ramps at the civic body’s offices and public places for the convenience of physically challenged.

There were about 25,000 physically disabled in Pimpri-Chinchwad area, who find it difficult to visit the offices due to unavailability of the ramp facility.

A wheelchaired bound social activist and president of Jagrit Apanga Sanstha, Manav Kamble, sent a notice to the PCMC.

Kamble said he was going on an indefinite hunger strike from June 13.

The legal notice had been issued on the basis that according to the Rehabilitation of Disabled Act, it was mandatory for all government authorities to provide the ramp facility to the physically challenged.

“The PCMC had seriously violated the act and hence I have sent a notice to it,’’ he said.

So far, the PCMC has failed to construct ramps at its head office, zonal offices and even its auditoriums and gardens. Due to the absence of ramps, the physically challenged are not able to enter these public places.

Kamble said, “It is a shame that the PCMC has not constructed a ramp at its head office. Hence, physically challenged people have to depend on others if they have to visit PCMC head office for any work.’’

Kamble said for last three years, has been requesting PCMC officials to provide a ramp at the head office but the civic officials had cold shouldered him.

In April 25, 2007 he sent letter to former municipal commissioner Dilip Band but there was no response from the civic body. Hence, Kamble sent a letter to the Directorate of Social Welfare informing them that the civic body had not installed a ramp at its office. The Directorate of Social Welfare also sent a letter to the PCMC in 2007. However, the PCMC did not install the ramp.
