Pune, which has been an important hub for education and civic activism, has come out strongly in support of social crusader Anna Hazare.

From day-long relay fasts outside the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) headquarters, to young people skipping at least one meal daily, the citizens are supporting Hazare in various ways. Signature campaigns in various corners of the city, candle light rallies and other such demonstrations are being held on a daily basis.

In Pune on Friday, many young people in the age group of 21-28 told DNA that they had skipped a meal on Friday to support Hazare and the country’s fight against corruption.

On April 3, two days before Hazare began his indefinite fast in New Delhi, prominent Pune-based voluntary organisations like the Professionals Party of India, Parivartan, Dnyan-Setu, Sajag Nagrik Manch, Art of Living, Pune and the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Janandolan Nyaas of Ralegan Siddhi came together to launch a signature campaign. On the first day itself, 1,000 signatures were collected. This was followed by a silent march on April 5.

The support for Anna has also found resonance in the industrial city of Pimpri-Chinchwad neighbouring Pune. More than 50 employee unions from Pimpri-Chinchwad, Talegaon, Chakan, Ranjangaon and social organisations, along with citizens’ groups, extended their support to Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption agitation on Thursday.

Employee unions from leading companies like Sandvik Asia, Thermax Ltd, JCB, Spaco, General Motors, Atlas Copco, Alfa Laval, Greaves Cotton, Suzlon and Innovative Technology took part in a support march in Pimpri on Thursday.

Pune-based industrialists like Rahul Bajaj, chairman Bajaj Auto, Kinetic Group chairman Arun Firodia, and former Nasscom chief and CEO, Zensar Technologies, Ganesh Natarajan, said they admired Anna’s drive.
