The top brass of the city police has directed senior police inspectors (SPI) to immediately register criminal cases at the police station level.

The decision has been taken after the city police commissioner, Meeran Chadha Borwankar, was flooded with complaints that the police are not registering criminal cases at police stations, and also not taking cognisance of it.

A senior police officer attached with the city police told DNA, “A lot of citizens complained that the police were not registering criminal cases at the police station level. As a result, the order was issued last week,” he said.

Besides, SPIs have also been directed to be present at the police station when cases are being registered to ensure that the cases are handled seriously. The order states that if the SPI is busy investigating some other case, the police inspector (crime) should be present at the police station when complaints are being lodged.

In case the SPI or the police inspector (crime) is not present when a complaint is being filed, stringent action will be taken against the officers concerned.

On October 9, the Kothrud police had booked Ravindra Hemraj Dhangekar, the group leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), two city-based builders and 12 others for allegedly trespassing on a plot of land in the posh Bhusari Colony in Kothrud area.

The complaint was lodged by the owner of the land, Dr Manohar Khanderao Thakar (79). According to the complaint, Thakar had gone to the Kothrud police station to file a complaint, but the police failed to register it.

On Sunday, Thakar went to the city commissioner’s office, but he couldn’t file the complaint, as it was a holiday.
