Like previous years, this year’s monsoon too would bring woes for the residents of the Range Hill Road.

The Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) has failed to take remedial measures to prevent water logging on that bus thoroughfare of the city.

An arterial road for the residents of defence quarters of Range Hill, Aundh Road and Bopodi, the Range Hill Road is plagued by water logging since many years.

Important institutions like Station Workshop EME, Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS) and other military establishment are located on this road.

Due to the gradient of the road and the absence of proper rain water drainage system, water logging is a perpetual problem on this area.

The problem is chronic between the stretch of the road from the Range Hill Chowk to the SIMS gate. Even a slight spell of rain causes water logging on that stretch.

A local resident of the area, Ranjit Rathod lamented that due to the water logging during monsoon, the movement of vehicles virtually comes to a standstill often.

“In fact, during the rain on Saturday, there was water logging on the road that led four cars spluttering to a stop in the heavy downpour. The traffic was held up for almost half an hour,’’ he recollected.

Last year, the heavy downpour had compelled the students of SIMS to come out on the streets to manage the traffic snarls.

“Many of the vehicles had stopped because of water entering their engines. We spent over an hour on the roads during rains to clear the traffic jam. The water had also entered our hostel premises,’’ said Shreyas Baghmar, a final year student of SIMS.

Baghmar, affirmed that last year after the monsoon, the officials of Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB), had come for a site visit, but nothing had happened till date, he said.

The vice-president of KCB, Manish Surendra Anand,
admitted there has been an ‘inordinate delay’ in addressing the water logging problem of the Range Hill Road.

“We had submitted a detailed proposal to the board to address the problem, but it got held up due to a number of technical reasons. Hence, we could not start the work prior to the monsoon,’’ he said.

Anand hastily added that the KCB would carry out work on the road at the earliest.

“We would look for a dry spell during the rainy season itself and initiate the work. The work will be undertaken on a war footing so that we are able to complete the work on time,’’ he assured.
