Residents of Shantirakshak Cooperative Housing Society of policemen on Monday claimed that 40 flats would have to be demolished due to the proposed 9-metre-wide road passing through their property and approved by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

They demanded that the proposed road be cancelled. Shantirakshak has 740 apartments. It is a housing colony built by policemen on land allotted to them by the state government in 1980.

Founder president of the society, RB Jadhav, and activist Ravindra Borate made the demand on Monday in a press conference.

Borate said he acquired all the documents pertaining to the housing society and the proposed road by the PMC by using the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005.

He found out that the road has been wrongly marked on the existing buildings. If the road is to be built as approved by the PMC, then the existing four buildings would have to be demolished.

He said that the road was wrongly approved by the PMC corporators for convenience of a private housing project behind Shantirakshak.

Barate demanded that action be taken against officers concerned who approved the construction project and the approach road for it. He demanded action against corporators also for approving the proposal of the road.
