Kothrud residents might experience water logging this monsoon due to the ongoing road work on the DP Road.

The DP Road is an arterial road of the area connecting Sagar Colony and Bhelkenagar Chowk. Hundreds of commuters use this stretch daily.

Although the locality has not faced any water logging problem in the past, the trenches dug up by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) road department has made the residents fear it would cause traffic problems in the area due to water logging and slushy road conditions.

The PMC is presently working on replacing the present pipe culverts with box culverts in that area.

According to a junior engineer of PMC, Rajesh Gurram, who is incharge of the road, the civic body had sanctioned a budget of Rs7 crores for this work on March 31 and the work started on April 1.

Gurram stated that although there were no previous complaints of water logging on the road, it used to be a problem in some of the areas in Sagar Colony.

The proposed box culverts would solve these problems as water would easily flow through box culverts and not cause blockage.
According to a resident of DP Road, Karan Koparade, “We have to take many small lanes to reach the main Kothrud Depot Road and since a lot of people are forced to take these tiny routes, traffic congestion is a major problem.”

A local shopkeeper, Kanhiya Mawani, said, “There was no progress in this work during last week. We do not know when it will get over. And since monsoon has already set in, I apprehend that the Shantiban Road could become inaccessible if there is heavy downpour,” he said.

Residents said if the civic administration had implemented the project in time, there would have been no water logging problem. Gurram said the September 1 deadline to finish the work will be met.

“We can finish the work on Shantiban Road within next 15 days,” he said, admitting that the pace of work would be sluggish during the rainy season.
