The Pune railway division is understood to have sent a proposal to the railway ministry to start new long distance express trains to destinations in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

Sources in the division told DNA that the proposal is based on the demands made by various organisations to the authorities regarding the introduction of long distance trains from Pune to other cities.

“There is a huge demand for trains from Pune to Ahmedabad and Jaipur,” said a railway official.

According to Pune division officials, the running of trains to the two cities would receive tremendous response, making it financially viable for the Railways.

“Sizeable passengers from Pune visit places such as Surat, Vadodara and Jaipur at least thrice a year. Adding more AC coaches to these trains would be financially beneficial, as a people travelling to these destinations prefer to travel in AC coaches,” said a railway official.

The Pune railway division has also received demands to introduce new trains to Uttar Pradesh to link Pune to Lunckow, Kanpur, Sultanpur and Gorakhpur.
“There are a large number of people from UP living in Pune,” sources said. The division has also sent proposal to have more trains connecting Pune to south Indian cities, including Hyderabad.
