The Congress on Sunday claimed that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was gripped by fear psychosis on seeing the collective strength of the Congress, and made it clear that it would fight the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections without any alliance.

Gev Awari, observer of the Congress for the PMC elections told the media, “Western Maharashtra is a stronghold of the NCP. But the Congress party’s dynamic leader in the form of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has challenged them in their stronghold, and now they have developed fear psychosis. The Congress leaders are united to fight the elections in Pune and our strength has disappointed the NCP leaders.”

He said the party was ready to face the challenges of the NCP, Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The NCP on Saturday had given hints of going it alone for the PMC elections, when NCP leader and deputy chief minister, Ajit Pawar, launched an attack on the member of Parliament, Suresh Kalmadi and the Congress.

Awari said, “The alliance between the Congress and the NCP is broken for the PMC elections. Most of the party workers felt we should fight the elections alone and the Congress is now ready to take on the three-tier challenge of the NCP, Shiv Sena and BJP.”

Congress city unit president, Abhay Chhajed supported Awari’s stand and said, “There is always uncertainty in the NCP when it comes to taking decisions for the development of Pune city. Ajit Pawar failed to bring funds for Pune’s development work in the last five years. Whatever funds Pune got were brought by the Congress, not the NCP.”

Congress leader Sharad Ranpise, at the press conference said, “The Congress does not believe in winning the PMC elections with  ‘Dadagiri’ (hooliganism). Pune is a cultural city and the Congress party has a long history of culture. We will win the elections with the help of our culture.”
